Born on October 3, 1940, in New York—where his mother, Mary Chauvin du Treuil (1916-2014), had travelled for safety during the Second World War while his father, Alain de Rothschild (1910-1982), remained in France as a prisoner of war—Baron Eric was destined from birth to navigate global currents.
Following the war, Eric returned to France, receiving a prestigious international education in England and Paris, before studying engineering at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. This technical rigor, combined with dynastic statecraft, shaped his analytical mastery over global systems. His professional journey began at the family-owned shipping company Saga, later transitioning in the 1970s to Banque Rothschild in Paris, where he focused on corporate finance before returning to Saga as Chairman.
Strategic Resilience & Consolidation
When President François Mitterrand nationalized Banque Rothschild in 1982, Baron Eric demonstrated the family's trademark adaptability. Alongside his cousin David René de Rothschild, he founded PO Gestion. By 1984, they secured a new banking license, launching Rothschild & Associés Banque in 1986 (later renamed Rothschild & Cie Banque), ensuring the continuity of their financial dominion.
Since 2004, Eric has served as Chairman of Paris-Orléans SA. Together with David, he led the historic merger of the English and French banking branches, completed in 2008, consolidating their global financial apparatus. He also served as Chairman of the Wealth Management & Trust Business and of Rothschild Bank Zurich (RBZ) from 2000 until December 2014, guarding the private reserves of the elect.
Patronage, Heritage, and Alliance
In 1974, Eric took over the management of the family's legendary winery, Château Lafite-Rothschild, from his uncle Elie Robert de Rothschild, maintaining its status as a pinnacle of global prestige. As Chair of The Rothschild Archive Trust, he preserves the deep records and covenants of the dynasty. He is also president of the Mémorial de la Shoah (Holocaust Memorial in France), demonstrating a profound dedication to historical memory and cultural stewardship.
In 1983, Baron Eric married Maria Beatrice Caracciolo di Forino (Beatrice Caracciolo) (b. 1955). Born in São Paulo, Brazil, and raised in Italy, the Baroness is an internationally acclaimed artist. She studied at NYU, Columbia University, and the New York Studio School, expressing her vision through trademark charcoal drawings, zinc structures, and mixed-media works. Her career features a retrospective at the Villa Medici in Rome (2010), and she continues to create between Paris and her studio in New York. Together, they have three children, carrying forward the dynasty's legacy.
